Resisting White Supremacy & Fighting for Justice
We stand with the students and community of Charlottesville as they stand up to fascism and fight white supremacy. Today and every day, we are committed to fighting for a more just and equitable world for all.
This weekend’s white supremacy and terrorism in Charlottesville, VA, has been horrifying. Racism, white supremacy, bigotry, anti-Semitism, and hate have no place in our society.
We stand with the students and community of Charlottesville as they stand up to fascism and fight white supremacy. Today and every day, we are committed to fighting for a more just and equitable world for all.
The white supremacist violence that terrorized Charlottesville isn’t a new phenomenon. But it’s been newly emboldened by Trump and his allies at the highest levels of government, who have given it space to flourish. Our response cannot only be to denounce this act of terror. We must also double-down on doing the hard work of confronting and dismantling the racism, bigotry and anti-Semitism that pervades our society at every level – in government policies, in our local communities, and in our own institutions and movements. This is just as much a part of our struggle as stopping the burning of fossil fuels. We can not face a crisis that is about saving humanity while allowing people and policies to deny the humanity of others.
With Trump and his white supremacist allies holding the levers of federal power, it’s incumbent on officials at all levels of government to step up – to use their positions of power to counteract this growing wave of hate and defend vulnerable communities. Unfortunately, what we saw in Charlottesville was an abdication of this responsibility. Courageous community members were left to defend themselves from extremists wielding torches, guns, sticks, and pepper spray. Our institutions must stop giving safe harbor to white supremacists and start prioritizing the safety of the communities they are terrorizing.
