Standing Against Right-Wing Violence and Racism in the UK
Oil Change International condemns the right-wing violence against innocent people in the UK and refuses to remain silent. We are appalled at the brutal and mindless thuggery, racism, violence, Islamophobia, and intimidation against People of Color, immigrants, refugees, and people seeking asylum.
Oil Change International condemns the right-wing violence against innocent people in the UK and refuses to remain silent. We are appalled at the brutal and mindless thuggery, racism, violence, Islamophobia, and intimidation against People of Color, immigrants, refugees, and people seeking asylum. Some are now labeling what is happening as domestic terrorism, fuelled by misinformation from politicians, the press, and influential media commentators on social media.
We stand in solidarity with all those affected and those who, like us, are appalled at the events of the last week. Communities across the UK need to stand united and say no to right-wing racist and Islamophobic violence. Refugees are welcome, fascists and extremists are not.
We hope all those responsible are held to account for their actions, including those whose words incited such atrocities. It is only a few weeks since five peaceful environmental protesters were imprisoned for a total of 21 years for holding a Zoom call. They were not burning down hotels housing those seeking asylum, or trying to attack a mosque, or vandalizing universities or libraries. The government and courts need to recognize the difference between legitimate nonviolent protest and serious racist hate-fuelled violence and terrorism and act accordingly.
In the past, when racist violence and intimidation have occurred in the UK, it has always been defeated by the intersectional power of people of all colours, backgrounds, and religions. Love and solidarity has always defeated hate. It will do so again.
