"I don’t want you to listen to me. I want you to listen to the scientists. And I want you to unite behind the science. And then I want you to take action”.
In a sign of things to come, the number of Congress members who've signed the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge has now more than doubled. Over 30 Members of Congress have now pledged to reject all contributions from the oil, gas, and coal industries, with some races still to be called that could increase that number even further.
Communities in Houston, Florida, Louisiana, Puerto Rico, and California are just beginning the long road to recovery from disasters made worse by climate change. It would seem downright irresponsible to increase taxpayer handouts to spur fossil fuel production at a time like this. But that’s exactly what’s being proposed in Washington.
If a climate test were to be applied to this bill, there’s little doubt it would fail.
2015 is already bringing new challenges — including a congress that’s set on ignoring climate science and fighting for the fossil fuel industry instead of the American people.
Where we played our game -- a game of communities rising up, of organizing, of using facts to guide us, of running straight at our progressive values and being unashamed of them -- we won. And those wins were beautiful.
