New analysis details why a just energy transition in Africa requires an end to new oil, gas, and coal extraction projects
Increased emissions under President Joe Biden would be equivalent to more than doubling existing emissions from U.S. coal plants if the U.S. moves ahead with 21 major fossil fuel infrastructure projects pending review by the Biden Administration.
One day before world leaders meet to discuss the energy transition at the United Nations High Level Dialogue on Energy, more than 200 civil society organizations (CSOs) from over 40 countries have released a statement calling on world leaders to end international public finance for coal, oil and gas.
On Thursday, September 16th, Ministers from Denmark and Costa Rica will announce they will form the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance (BOGA). BOGA is a diplomatic initiative bringing together countries and jurisdictions that have ended licensing for new oil and gas exploration and production and are setting an end date for their production.
Today, Oil Change International and over 150 other civil society organisations from all over the world sent an open letter to International Energy Agency (IEA) director Dr. Fatih Birol, urging him to center 1.5 degrees Celsius (ºC) in the 2021 World Energy Outlook (WEO). The IEA is due to release the WEO in one month, on October 13, 2021.
"This is a major victory for Indigenous resistance and the climate. Trudeau needs to stop supporting this risky project immediately, and end all fossil fuel subsidies," said Kyle Gracey of OCI.
"We urge Congress to end fossil fuel subsidies, and we expect Leader Schumer and Chairman Wyden to stand by their promises to end dirty subsidies to oil, gas, and coal," said Collin Rees of Oil Change.
The new report shows that Indigenous communities resisting the more than 20 fossil fuel projects analyzed have stopped or delayed greenhouse gas pollution equivalent to at least 25 percent of annual U.S. and Canadian emissions.
Today, Oil Change U.S., Sunrise Movement, Evergreen Action, Sierra Club, Indivisible, and other partners launched a joint Gas Is Not Clean campaign to ensure a potential Clean Energy Standard (CES) or Clean Energy Payment Program (CEPP) prohibits the inclusion of gas.
