Scandal has a habit of coming full-circle. For months on the campaign trail, Donald Trump promised to “lock her up”, referring to Hillary Clinton’s use of private email accounts.

Later today, it is expected that Rex Tillerson, the ex-boss of Exxon, will be confirmed as America’s 69th Secretary of State.

Even in their wildest dreams the oil boys at Exxon could never have imagined that their man would actually make it to one of the top jobs in the US Government. But this now looks likely after the Senate Foreign Relations committee narrowly voted to approve ex-Exxon boss, T-Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State yesterday.

As the Trump Administration yesterday descended into a farce of “alternative facts” to try and argue that there had been historic numbers at the new President’s inauguration, it is quite clear "alternative" and blatently bogus facts will be used on energy and climate too.

Today Rex Tillerson, under oath, denied the existence of fossil fuel subsidies. In fact, according to our new analysis ExxonMobil likely gets as much as $1 billion in subsidies each year.

Three words sum up Rex Tillerson’s performance yesterday in his confirmation hearing for Secretary of State: Unprepared. Unqualified. Unacceptable

Rex Tillerson’s efforts to paint a picture of moderation amount to nothing more than a ruthless public relations campaign to curry favor in the media. Meanwhile he has pursued a reckless path of continued oil and gas development in order to continue making as much money as possible for himself and his company, regardless of the consequences.

When sanctions were placed on Russia, Exxon left behind the potential to produce billions of barrels of oil. Secretary of State appointee Rex Tillerson could be in a position to secure that prize for Exxon.

To everyone keeping score at home, you can mark this up as Putin’s payback for election intervention. The nomination of Rex Tillerson has revealed with startling clarity that our government is being set up to support the interests of Big Oil and Putin, not the American people or the planet. Now more than ever, we demand a Separation of Oil and State.
