COP28 has the potential to be an historic moment in confronting the climate crisis. The COP28 Presidency has an opportunity to secure a transformational negotiated outcome, if it secures a robust negotiated energy package, including an unambiguous agreement to end all new oil and gas expansion, a clear call to equitably and rapidly phase out all fossil fuels, and a commitment to triple deployment of nature-positive and community-beneficial renewable energy and double energy efficiency.

Today, at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its long-awaited methane rule that aims to curb the prolific emissions of methane associated with America’s decades-long fracked gas boom. 

Minutes ago, Norway joined a major international initiative to end international public finance for fossil fuels today at COP28, called the Clean Energy Transition Partnership.

The Global Decarbonisation Accelerator is a trojan horse for Big Oil and Gas greenwash. The Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter is filled with hollow promises and recycled commitments that only address operational emissions, and ignore the 80-90% of oil and gas producing companies’ climate pollution from the oil and gas being burned. 

As the U.S. government arrives in Dubai for the UNFCCC COP28 climate summit, frontline communities, youth, and civil society are planning to confront the Biden-Harris administration’s oil and gas expansion and urging a rapid fossil fuel phaseout.
