scepticSlowly there is some political progress as we edge towards Copenhagen.

Some sixty five world leaders will attend the Copenhagen climate talks, although whether Obama actually attends is still anyone’s guess.

Moreover over the last fortnight, three big countries have made major new pledges to cut their carbon emissions.

Russia, South Korea and Brazil have all announced new targets for cutting CO2, moves which have led “to a significant improvement in hopes for the outcome of the Copenhagen climate summit,” according to the Independent.

But lurking on the background and pulling strings are the climate change sceptics and fossil fuel lobbyists who are doing everything in their power to derail the conference.

The hacking of thousands of emails from the University of East Anglia is being used by the sceptics as the “holy grail” of definitive proof that climate change does not exist.

Unfortunately nothing could be further from the truth and it is yet more lies and disinformation from the sceptic camp, that is now cherry-picking information to prove a political point.

The data will be used by sceptics to argue for inaction.

But we have already had a decade of inaction and the sceptics and lobbyists are to  blame.

One of the world’s leading climate scientists, Professor Bob Watson, chief scientists at the UK Department for Environment and Rural Affairs, is arguing that sceptics and fossil fuel companies that have lobbied against action on greenhouse gas emissions have “squandered the world’s chance to avoid dangerous global warming”.

In an interview with the Guardian newspaper, Watson said: “Those that have opposed a deal on climate, which would include elements of the fossil fuel industry, have clearly made making a 2C target much, much harder, if not impossible. They’ve clearly put the world at risk of far more adverse effects of climate change.”

Watson calls the last decade “a lost opportunity”, where “elements within the fossil fuel industry clearly had major implications for the Bush administration,” he argues.

So as the sceptics pour over leaked emails to try and make one final effort to manipulate the truth and delay a deal once more, you know it is they that are putting the world at risk.
