Canada’s NDC fails to meet its fair share of the 1.5°C survival limit
“Canada’s NDC fails to meet its fair share of the 1.5°C survival limit and contradicts the global commitment to transition away from fossil fuels made at COP28.”
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
13 February 2025 – Canada has submitted its updated climate plan, Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), under the Paris Agreement.
In response Romain Ioualalen, Global Policy manager at Oil Change International, said:
“Canada’s NDC fails to meet its fair share of the 1.5°C survival limit and contradicts the global commitment to transition away from fossil fuels made at COP28. While Canada is one of the first countries to outline implementation plans for the COP28 fossil fuel decision in its NDC, the proposed measures lack the necessary ambition.
“Despite positive steps like commitments to end fossil fuel subsidies and cap oil and gas pollution, these measures are insufficient in the face of the climate emergency and record profiteering from oil and gas CEOs. As a wealthy oil and gas producing country, Canada has both the responsibility and economic means to implement a rapid and just transition away from fossil fuel production. The country is on track to be the world’s second largest developer of new oil and gas projects to 2050, equivalent to the lifetime emissions of more than 100 new coal plants. To align with global goals and avoid the worst of climate disaster, Canada must immediately end fossil fuel expansion and initiate a just transition to rapidly and fairly phase out fossil fuels.
“As this year’s G7 host, Canada has the unique opportunity to demonstrate real leadership at a time when many countries are retreating from climate action and endangering our collective future.”
