Countries Speak Out in Support of COP30 Roadmap to Transition Away From Fossil Fuels

“The options for a fossil fuel roadmap in the current text are not worth the paper they’re written on – but today’s show of support from a growing group of countries for a concrete roadmap to equitably transition away from fossil fuels proves that momentum is shifting.”
November 18, Belém, Brazil – Today a growing group of countries voiced their support for a COP30 outcome on a roadmap to transition away from fossil fuels, following this morning’s draft Mutirão Decision issued by the UN talks Presidency.
In response, Romain Ioualalen, Global Policy lead at Oil Change International said:
“The options for a fossil fuel roadmap in the current text are not worth the paper they’re written on and fall dramatically short of what science, justice, and responsibility demand. Replacing a global plan for an exit from fossil fuels with workshops and roundtables will not deliver the equitable transition the world needs to avoid the worst of the climate crisis and will deeply erode the credibility of this process. Securing a roadmap on fossil fuels will require developed countries to show they’re willing to heed developing countries’ calls for more public finance on fair terms.
“But today’s show of support from a growing group of countries for a concrete roadmap to equitably transition away from fossil fuels proves that momentum is shifting. Ministers now have a choice: cling to a hollow text that lets major polluters off the hook, or rise to the moment and leave COP30 with plans for a roadmap grounded in equity that commits wealthy, Global North producers to move first and fund a fair transition for those who need it.”
