Shell Shocked Land — new documentary to remember the Ogoni 9
On November 10, 2025, to mark the 30th Anniversary of the murder of Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Ogoni 9, Oil Change International produced a new documentary, “Shell Shocked Land: Honoring the Legacy of the Ogoni 9 & the Fight for Justice for the Niger Delta,” alongside the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) and Rewild TV.
Today is the 30th Anniversary of Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Ogoni 9. To mark the event, Oil Change International has collaborated with the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) and Rewild TV to produce a short documentary, entitled “Shell Shocked Land: Honoring the Legacy of the Ogoni 9 & the Fight for Justice for the Niger Delta.”
After thirty years, the fight for environmental justice is as strong as ever in the Niger Delta. Last year, oil giant Shell sold its onshore operations in the Niger Delta, a move critics saw as an attempt to avoid liability and compensation for decades of environmental destruction. Communities continue to fight back, with the oil giant still in court over pollution in London, with a full trial expected in 2027.
Meanwhile, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu is pushing for the resumption of oil production in Ogoni, a move the local community vehemently rejects. So the fight for justice, clean up, compensation and full exoneration for the Ogoni 9 continues. As does the ongoing struggle to stop new oil production in Ogoni and promote renewables.
