Reactive: New Zealand will no longer qualify as a BOGA member after the country restarts offshore oil and gas drilling

November 11, 2024

“The notion that New Zealand can both reopen oil and gas exploration and remain a member of the global initiative whose mission is to end it is preposterous. There is no doubt New Zealand will no longer qualify as a BOGA member when the bill passes.”

In response to declarations by New Zealand Climate Change Minister Simon Watts that New Zealand can remain a member of the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance after it restarts offshore oil and gas drilling, David Tong, Global Industry campaign manager at Oil Change International, said:

“The notion that New Zealand can both reopen oil and gas exploration and remain a member of the global initiative whose mission is to end it is preposterous. There is no doubt New Zealand will no longer qualify as a BOGA member when the bill passes. Scientific consensus is very clear that new oil and gas is not compatible with limiting warming to 1.5°C, an existential limit for our Pacific neighbours, and Simon Watts is deeply mistaken if he thinks there will be no consequences for New Zealand’s regional and global reputation for ignoring it.”
