Response to new UK Prime Minister Announcements

In response to the appointment of Andy Burnham as Prime Minister and his cabinet announcements, Rosemary Harris, North Sea Senior Campaigner at Oil Change UK, said: 

“With his new Cabinet in place, Andy Burnham must now deliver on his promises to rebuild trust and improve the lives of people across the UK. Just weeks ago, Andy Burnham described the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty as ‘a lifeline’ and urged governments to end coal, oil and gas and hold polluters accountable. If he is to stand by his own words, he and his new Energy Secretary must see the energy transition for the opportunity it is – to create good jobs, improve people’s homes, bring down energy bills and create a more fair UK. We cannot afford to lose momentum on the energy transition. This government must strengthen—not weaken—the commitment to end new oil and gas expansion in the North Sea, invest in workers and communities, and accelerate the rollout of renewable energy. Anything less would be a step backwards.”
