Ahead of Nepal PM’s UN Address, Oil Change International Calls for Loss and Damage Funding

Ahead of Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s address to the United Nations General Assembly, Laurie van der Burg, Public Finance Manager at Oil Change International, said: 

“The people of Nepal just faced a deadly glacial flood caused by a fossil fueled climate crisis they did not create. Wealthy, high-emitting countries must urgently fill the Loss and Damage Fund, provide grant-based climate finance at the scale needed, and end the fossil fuel expansion driving this destruction. As Oil CEOs rake in record-breaking profits on the back of oil wars, governments must end fossil fuel subsidies and instead make polluters pay for their climate wreckage. On the road to COP31, governments must deliver the funding Nepal and other climate-vulnerable countries are owed so communities can recover, rebuild, transition, and prepare for the impacts ahead.”
