Corrosion Crisis Spreads as Shell Criticised

The corrosion crisis within the oil industry continues to spread. Now Shell has been criticised by the shareholder action group, the Ecumenical Council for Corporate Responsibility (ECCR) over its corroded gas pipes in Ireland.

Canon Christopher Hall, a Shell shareholder and spokesman for ECCR, said he alerted Shell in May to the corroded pipeline sections which are awaiting installation to bring gas ashore from the Corrib gas field. They have been stored for years in the open air in a quarry at Killybegs, Co Donegal, and are said to be heavily corroded. Canon Hall said: “If the pipes are showing corrosion even before they are installed, one wonders what might happen later.”
