US Insurance Commissioners Take Action On Climate

So we now know that three-quarters of the American public is concerned about climate change (see blog below) and believes that Bush should be doing more.

They are not the only ones. Earlier this month the Insurance Commissioners of the 50 U.S. states voted unanimously to establish a task force on the possible impact of climate change on the insurance industry and its consumers.

“It’s becoming clearer that we are experiencing more frequent and more powerful weather events that pose huge challenges for the insurance industry,” said Tim Wager, director of Nebraska’s Department of Insurance and co-chairman of the new task force set up by National Association of Insurance Commisioners.

The new initiative had originally been scheduled for a approval at a meeting in New Orleans that was then cancelled due to Hurricane Katrina. Now if that didn’t get the insurers alarm bells ringing, nothing will.
