Oil Change International responds to announcement of Mukhtar Babayev as COP29 President
This week, COP29 host country Azerbaijan announced that it would appoint Mukhtar Babayev as President of this year’s climate talks in Baku. Babayev served for multiple decades in various roles with Azerbaijan’s state-owned oil and gas company.

In response, Collin Rees, Campaign Manager at Oil Change International, released the following statement:

“COP29 must feature serious progress on rich countries paying to help the world achieve a fair, funded transition away from all fossil fuels. We need a shift away from the business-as-usual threatening lives and wrecking the climate, but Azerbaijan appointing another lifelong oil man to lead the next UN climate talks pushes us closer to the abyss.”
