Oil Change International response to Trump’s withdrawal from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
For immediate release
It is clear that the core objective of U.S. foreign policy is now to further the interests of the fossil fuel industry, at the expense of billions around the world who will suffer the consequences.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
In response to President Trump’s withdrawal from the foundational international treaty on climate change, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC):
Domestic Implications:
Allie Rosenbluth, Oil Change International US Campaign Manager, said:
“Trump’s withdrawal from the UNFCCC is another example of advancing his authoritarian playbook and fossil fuel interests at the expense of people and the planet. Just as in Venezuela, where his administration launched an illegal military operation to seize control of oil infrastructure, and in Minneapolis, where an ICE officer fatally shot a woman during a federal enforcement surge, Trump’s UNFCCC withdrawal reflects the same pattern of centralizing power, protecting elites, and disregarding public safety and democratic norms. In every realm, Trump weaponizes and abuses the power of the Presidency to shield entrenched interests, from fossil fuel executives to repressive policing, while people and the planet bear the cost. Pulling out of the UNFCCC, ratified by the U.S. Senate and foundational to global climate cooperation, is a dangerous overreach. Across the U.S., state and local governments, and communities are stepping up to protect public health, democratic rights, and build resilience for a more just future.”
International implications:
Romain Ioulalen, Oil Change International, Global Policy Manager, said:
“Internationally, this withdrawal is a betrayal. The U.S. has always been the biggest planet wrecker – the United States has been the single largest driver of increased oil and gas extraction since the Paris Agreement – and this is yet another instance of the U.S. behaving like a rogue state and it should be treated as such on the global stage by the countries claiming to defend climate multilateralism and international cooperation. It is clear that the core objective of U.S. foreign policy is now to further the interests of the fossil fuel industry, at the expense of billions around the world who will suffer the consequences. Leaders from the Global South, the countries that are most impacted and least responsible, are charting a path toward a fossil-free future. The rest of the world cannot wait for the U.S. to come to its senses. While Trump turns the country into a rogue state, we must redouble global efforts to end the fossil era.”
