The elephant in the room of UK climate policy

In an historic judgement yesterday, a Dutch court issued an interim ruling that it does have jurisdiction to hear the legal case bought by four widows of the Ogoni 9, who were murdered by the Nigerian military back in 1995.

In what can only be described as verging on the bizarre, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has given the contract to fight fake news to an organization that pushes fake news on climate change.

“The writing is on the wall for oil companies that do not support global efforts to avoid a climate catastrophe by urgently phasing out fossil fuels and transitioning to a low-carbon world."

“The planet is on a fast path to destruction. The media must cover this like it’s the only story that matters”

Even though the science says we cannot carry on drilling, the oil industry capital investment over the next decade is forecast to rise over 85%, reaching over $1 trillion a year.

“Until we have a law to prosecute those who destroy the planet, corporations will never be called to account for their crimes”.

The message in today’s Asian Financial Times is simple: climate leaders don’t fund coal.

"This is not a political movement, this is a movement of humanity. We are all backgrounds, all ages, all races, bound together in one wish, one dream, which is that we will have a good, decent, loving future, for generations to come.”

Minnesota's new bill, which would stop the buildout of fossil fuel infrastructure, is a critical piece of the overall Green New Deal puzzle – in order to address climate climate crisis, we must be actively winding down the fossil fuel industry by stopping its expansion and phasing out existing infrastructure with an equitable transition.
