The only path to climate stability is for governments to manage a stable decline in oil while investing in a just transition for workers and currently fossil-fuel dependent communities.
Limiting warming to 1.5ºC is both urgent and possible, but governments and investors alike need pathways that allow them to plan for success, not further entrench fossil fuels.

Yesterday, the Spanish Parliament adopted a wide-ranging Climate Change and Energy Transition law, which includes a ban on new fossil fuel exploration and production licenses.
"President Biden’s executive order is a welcome change from past failures to regulate the financial industry, but the Biden administration must make it crystal-clear that 'net zero' means no more fossil fuel expansion and no false solutions," said Rees.
"Arriving at COP26 with a climate risk plan that doesn’t adequately address financial institutions' funding of fossil fuels means the Biden Administration risks forfeiting its chance at climate leadership," said Rees.
"This Supreme Court decision was illegitimate and wrong, but does almost nothing to constrain President Biden's toolbox to address the climate crisis," said Collin Rees.
The Norwegian Government just postponed one of the country’s two oil and gas licensing rounds for the next three years. The decision was part of Norway's minority government's budget deal with the opposition Socialist Left Party (SV).
