The French government has opened a judicial investigation into the allegations of human rights violations of TotalEnergies’ controversial Mozambique LNG project.

In response, Oil Change International Public Finance Campaign Strategist Adam McGibbon said:

“This is unprecedented—the French state launching a legal investigation into one of its biggest companies underscores just how toxic this project is. No taxpayer money should be wasted on a venture already drenched in allegations of human rights violations. The UK and Dutch governments must reject financing for the Mozambique LNG project before even more damning revelations come to light. Financiers like the US EXIM Bank and Italy’s SACE must also reconsider their support in light of this news”
