COP30 Leadership Team Appointments Signals Crucial Opportunity for Brazil
“Brazil’s leadership team for COP30 in Belém signals promise at a critical and dangerous moment for global climate action.”
In response to Brazil appointing André Corrêa do Lago and Ana Toni to the COP30 leadership, Romain Ioualalen, Global Policy lead at Oil Change International, said:
“Brazil’s leadership team for COP30 in Belém signals promise at a critical and dangerous moment for global climate action. The appointment of such an experienced team is a crucial opportunity for Brazil to deliver on its promise to use COP30 for a global conversation on an equitable fossil fuel phaseout. Brazil holds a unique position as both a major fossil fuel producer and an aspiring climate leader from the Global South. This enables Brazil to effectively challenge Global North countries like the U.S., Canada, and Australia to fulfill their responsibilities – leading the fossil fuel phaseout and providing adequate, debt-free finance, instead of shirking responsibility like we saw in the outrageous outcome of COP29 in Baku and recent U.S. policy shifts.
“President Lula’s appointments come as the world grapples with the stark reality of climate change – from unprecedented wildfires to devastating floods. Corrêa do Lago and Toni have a huge role to shoulder, and the chance to be on the right side of science.”
