On 11 June 2025, Oil Change International hosted a pivotal roundtable in Oslo, uniting Labour politicians, trade union leaders, and environmental organisations from Norway, the United Kingdom, and Denmark. The discussion focused on forging a just energy transition across the North Sea region—one that protects workers, communities, and the climate.
The event created a rare and valuable space for cross-sector dialogue, and enabled participants to share national experiences, explore common challenges, and identify opportunities for collaboration. With the North Sea at the centre of Europe’s energy future, cooperation across borders is essential to ensuring a fair and sustainable transition away from fossil fuels.
Participants included:
- Labour Party representatives, including Scottish MSP Mercedes Villalba and Norwegian MP Mani Hussaini
- Trade union representatives from RMT, HK, Unite, Fagforbundet and 3F Esbjerg
- Civil society and environmental advocates from Platform, Friends of the Earth, Uplift, and Young Friends of the Earth
The roundtable featured case studies from each country on efforts to phase out oil and gas production. These were followed by group discussions on strategies to deliver a just transition that meets climate targets while protecting livelihoods. This roundtable marks the beginning of a broader initiative to deepen cooperation across the North Sea region. Oil Change International remains committed to supporting aligned movements and policymakers who are working to deliver a fair and funded transition.
