A new report, developed by the analysis agency Analyse & Tall SA in collaboration with Oil Change International, explores the attitudes of Norwegian voters on oil and gas issues before the upcoming September election. The survey, conducted by Ipsos in December 2024, offers timely insights on key oil and gas issues, and reveals that Labour Party voters place a higher priority on reducing Norway’s climate emissions and transitioning away from oil and gas towards renewable energy, compared to the national average.
Key findings:
- More than one in four Norwegian voters consider climate and environmental issues to be one of their top priorities when casting their vote in the 2025 election.
- Over 50% of Labour Party voters are against oil and gas operations in Arctic regions, and over 40% of Conservative Party voters are against oil and gas operations in Arctic regions.
- Labour Party voters place a higher priority on reducing Norway’s climate emissions and transitioning away from oil and gas towards renewable energy, compared to the national average.
This new data provides a deeper understanding of the priorities and concerns of Norwegian voters in relation to climate change and the future of the oil and gas industry. The survey underscores the growing demand for ambitious climate policies, particularly from those who support the Labour Party.
In response to the analysis, Silje Lundberg, North Sea Campaign Manager at Oil Change International said:
“This report highlights a crucial opportunity for the Labour Party to adopt a more ambitious oil and gas policy in line with the growing environmental concerns of their voters. As the party heads into its upcoming national congress in April, it’s clear that Labour Party supporters expect decisive action on climate change and a transition away from fossil fuels.
“This report shows that the Norwegian electorate, especially within the Labour Party, is ready for bold steps towards a sustainable future. Norwegian Labour Politicians need to draw inspiration from their party comrades on the other side of the North Sea, since the UK Labour-led Government just put forth their proposal to ban future licensing in the British North Sea.
“Now is the time for the Norwegian Labour party to align its policies with the priorities of its base and lead Norway towards a greener, more sustainable energy future.”
