Oil Change International Media Advisory – COP29 Day 4
As Finance Day begins at what’s being called the ‘Finance COP,’ negotiators face important moments in Baku. Draft text for the new climate finance goal (NCQG) presents a stark choice: deliver public grants at the trillion-dollar scale needed for a just transition away from fossil fuels, or rely on inadequate private sector mechanisms that risk deepening the Global South’s debt crisis. Following COP28’s historic agreement to transition away from fossil fuels, COP29’s success hinges on wealthy nations backing their commitments with real financial support. With global temperatures continuing to break records, the next decisions could either transform climate action through ambitious public financing of at least $1 trillion annually in public funding, or maintain a status quo that is failing the world’s most vulnerable communities.

Press Conference: How Fossil Fuel Companies Profit from Genocide
As the death toll in Gaza rises and millions face displacement, humanitarian catastrophe, and severe deprivation of basic needs, we must examine how multiple systems of injustice – from climate destruction to corporate profiteering – converge to perpetuate this crisis. This press conference exposes how the fossil fuel industry enables and profits from genocide and global conflicts, with urgent focus on Gaza. Voices from Palestine, climate justice organizations, and industry experts examine how oil is fueling colonialism and mass atrocities.

Statement:
Allie Rosenbluth, Oil Change International US Campaign Manager, said:
“The fossil fuel industry is not just destroying our climate – it’s actively profiting from genocide. These companies and the governments enabling them know exactly how their supplies are being used against Palestinian civilians, yet they continue shipping oil even after the International Court of Justice’s genocide ruling. Palestinian groups and their allies around the world have called for an energy and arms embargo demanding governments and companies cease all fuel and arms shipments to Israel until it ends the genocide and its regime of apartheid against the Palestinian people. Despite these strong demands, the U.S. continues to be a key supplier of JP8 Jet Fuel to Israel, which is crucial for its military operations. This isn’t just business – it’s complicity in mass atrocities.”

We will urge the White House to make a strong pledge for the U.S. NDC and NCQG that includes a commitment to phase out fossil fuels at home by 2031 and to provide its fair share of funding for climate action in lower income countries. This factsheet summarizes the coalition’s demands for what should be included in the U.S. NDC.
