Today, the EU presented its long-awaited roadmap towards ending Russian energy imports by 2027.

Laurie van der Burg, Oil Change International Global Public Finance Manager, said:

“The EU’s move to stop feeding Russia’s war machinery against Ukraine by ending fossil fuel imports is long overdue. However, in its bid to ensure energy security for its citizens, the EU should not move from one bad decision to another – shifting from Putin’s gas to increased reliance on Trump’s gas or any other gas is not the way. This risks repeating the costly mistake of not only exposing its citizens to volatile gas prices, but also fueling climate disasters and human rights violations.

“The only route to energy independence, security, affordability, and a liveable planet is a fair and full fossil fuel phaseout. Already, the EU has saved billions by cutting gas imports through investments in renewables and energy efficiency. It must stay the course.

“A petition calling on the EU not to buy more US gas as it phases out Russian fossil fuels, and instead to double down on a fair and green future has already gathered over 50,000 signatures.”
