Nearly 300 organizations call on Biden to end LNG expansion before Trump takes office

Today, nearly 300 organizations from around the world sent a letter to President Biden that calls on him to use the time he has left to stop the further expansion of LNG infrastructure, globally and in the US. LNG expansion threatens to put our climate goals out of reach, and poses grave risks to the health and safety of frontline communities. As we prepare to resist Donald Trump and his promises to unleash US LNG on the world, Biden must use the remaining days of his presidency to lock in as much climate progress as possible.
Climate advocates who signed the letter said:
Constantin Zerger, Head of Energy and Climate Protection at Deutsche Umwelthilfe:
“The energy crisis in Europe is over. There is no need for additional gas supplies from the United States for Europe. Instead of expanding already harmful fossil infrastructure, we need to turn the tide and accelerate the buildout of renewable energy. We must prioritize protecting climate targets and human rights over a second lifetime for a dirty industry.”
Ayumi Fukakusa, Deputy Executive Director with Friends of the Earth Japan:
“President Biden’s decision to pause LNG exports in the past provided a great opportunity for Japan to consider withdrawal of their own investment in LNG, and Japanese domestic demand for LNG is declining. The Japanese government is heavily involved in the US LNG business, and corporations selling off excessive LNG to other countries for profit despite the fact that it has nothing to do with Japan’s energy security and only serves corporate interests. Before it’s too late, the US and Japan must commit to stop expanding LNG for the planet and its people.”
Raena Garcia, Senior Energy Campaigner with Friends of the Earth U.S.:
“The Biden Administration has mere weeks to protect the planet from the threat of more LNG infrastructure, and the growing LNG boom under his watch is something we cannot afford. Now is the time to safeguard communities and the climate against the threat of growing LNG exports which the Administration can do by putting a stop to any more risky buildout from Big Oil.”
Collin Rees, United States Campaign Manager at Oil Change International:
“This is a critical moment for President Joe Biden’s legacy. He faces a stark choice between demonstrating bold climate leadership or aiding Trump’s reckless fossil fuel bonanza that will threaten communities worldwide and wreck the climate. Biden has two months remaining in office to cement strong LNG export regulations, end public finance for fossil fuels overseas, and block several deadly gas projects. Hundreds of organizations from dozens of countries are urging Biden to take bold action in his remaining time in office to block Trump’s LNG-fueled agenda and preserve a hope for a livable climate. We urge the president to listen to people — not polluters — and take action now.”
