26 February 2025 – Today, the COP Presidencies Troika (UAE, Azerbaijan, and Brazil) published a joint letter to parties, urging governments to fulfill the global commitments made at COP28 and COP29.
In response, Romain Ioualalen, Global Policy lead at Oil Change International, said:
“This letter is a helpful reminder to countries that they must deliver on the commitments made at COP28 and COP29, in particular on ending fossil fuels and delivering climate finance. Fulfilling these promises means countries must immediately end new fossil fuel expansion and cement the decision of the Global Stocktake to phase out fossil fuels in their national climate plans. This also applies to Brazil, whose credibility as next COP president is already threatened by its repeated commitment to expanding oil production in the Amazon. Governments must realize accelerating their fossil fuel exit is both a climate necessity and an economic and industrial opportunity.
“Despite COP pledges, there are still strong barriers preventing many countries from phasing out fossil fuels, including the lack of climate finance. Brazil has an opportunity to demonstrate true leadership at COP30 by convening a dialogue between fossil fuel producers and consumers on breaking down these unjust and systemic barriers holding countries back from an equitable fossil fuel phaseout.”
