In response to Brazil submitting the country’s new Nationally Determined Contribution, Shady Khalil, Senior Global Policy Strategist at Oil Change International, said:
“Brazil’s NDC submission demonstrates ambition in reducing emissions, but as a climate leader, the world needs Brazil to step up further. Brazil cannot claim to be at the “forefront of the global energy transition” unless it puts an immediate end to new fossil fuel projects. Currently, Brazil is planning to increase its production by 36% by 2035 – a fact ignored by the new national climate plan.
“We fully support Brazil’s call for the COP process to discuss fossil fuel phaseout dates, with rich countries taking the lead, and hope this will be a central tenet of COP30. This is the direction of ambition we should be seeing from the UAE and Azerbaijan, the other two COP Troika countries that promised 1.5°C-aligned national climate plans.
“This is no time to step back; the world and future generations are counting on Brazil to push forward. Brazil has the unique opportunity to make history — as a Global South leader, it can inspire action by setting ambitious proposals, demonstrating leadership, and uniting countries toward a just transition to renewables.”
