In response to the release of the Santa Marta Conference Report at London Climate Action Week, Romain Ioualalen, Global Policy Campaign Manager at Oil Change International, said:

“This ray of hope from the Santa Marta conference comes from the political courage of a few governments willing to stand with people against Big Oil and the Trump Administration’s “might is right” geopolitics. Today’s powerful statements of international solidarity from Palau, Colombia, and the Netherlands showed the growing consensus around the need for a just and equitable fossil fuel transition and we need more governments to join them. Publicly-led, planned, and funded transitions are how countries can reclaim their energy and economic sovereignty from the forces of fossil capital.

“As mentioned by Minister Irene Vélez, ‘the transition will never be a just one if countries are made to choose between paying their debt and transitioning from fossil fuels.’ It is important that Global North countries are willing to tackle international financial architecture reforms that are needed, including debt cancellation, technology transfer, and the end of investor–state dispute settlement (ISDS). These measures are essential to expanding energy access, supporting prosperity, and ensuring that renewable energy systems do not replicate the extractive dynamics of the fossil fuel economy.”
